ON THE RIVER

This week, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center has a special broadcast of a performance Franz Schubert’s epic, cantata-like song for tenor, horn, and piano, Auf dem Strom from 2016. I have a lot of very happy memories with this piece, having had the privilege of performing this piece many times over the years with some of the world’s greatest horn players. There is something incredibly special about the combination of the tenor voice and horn, and it is unbelievably gratifying to sing these beautiful phrases that intertwine so majestically with the ones Schubert wrote for the horn on top of the flowing piano part he composed. It really feels like the musical equivalent of soaring through the air.

This performance is one of those cherished memories, and it’s so lovely to see that it was documented so beautifully by the Chamber Music Society.

The broadcast also features other wonderful performances of other chamber gems by Brahms, Haydn, and Mendelssohn, as well as a really insightful interview with my amazing colleague, horn player Radovan Vlatkovic, at the intermission.

The concert is available for on-demand streaming through this coming Thursday at the CMSLC website.
